![]() ![]() If you make a salary typical of that of a mid level software engineer, then areas like Scottsdale, Chandler and Gilbert in the Phoenix region would be excellent choices. It’s very affordable for a city that has a pretty decent nightlife, plenty of nature spots in and around (very beautiful mountains and hikes) and plenty of other things to do that typical big cities offer. If this sounds like a more favourable option, might I recommend Phoenix. You will need to rent a car if you’d like to explore. You’ll have to be okay with ubering once in a while, since public transportation is inefficient. You’ll need to get a place that’s close to the gym and other conveniences that you need, so you can walk. If you move to Texas or a city such as Phoenix, these are much more affordable but you can’t do without a car. So you can manage without a car but will pay a lot in rent. Cities like Boston, NYC and Chicago have excellent public transportation by American standards but they’re quite expensive. The parts of the city where you'll likely hang out in are safe enough (it's kinda like Chicago if you've ever been, there's a clear geographic distinction between the "safe" and "not safe" parts of the city, and outside of a few exceptions like if you attend UChicago you're unlikely to find yourself accidentally in the "not safe" part).įor you, I think it is a decision between affordability v/s managing without a car. Most of the horror stories are in the reverse direction (people who sit in hours of traffic to commute *into* DC).įood and nightlife - there's lots of variety (different cuisines, including ones that aren't always easy to find like Ethiopian / El Salvadorean) and the quality is overall good, but on the expensive side (lots of places catering to expense accounts). If you're just using your car for grocery shopping, weekend trips etc. Traffic kinda sucks but if you live in DC proper it's fine - I reverse commuted to VA / MD for over a year and it's honestly not that bad. I'm in Washington DC right now, it's in a sweet spot within my company where the pay scale is the same as NYC/SF (for some reason, I have no idea why) but cost of living is medium. ![]() We could always do with more help and wisdom, friend!
